Peer Review in Practice

Knowing the principles of peer review is one thing – applying them to a real manuscript is another.

In this session, we will review a selected manuscript live from the editor’s cockpit. Together, we will discuss its key strengths and weaknesses, what matters for an editorial decision, and how to develop a structured and genuinely helpful review.

We are Pascal Baltzer and Matthias Dietzel: clinical radiologists, academic leaders, Editors-in-Chief and experienced digital educators in radiology.

Together, we combine hands-on clinical practice, professorial academic experience, editorial responsibility across multiple journals and extensive experience in online radiology education.

Radiology Perspectives builds on our long-standing collaboration and our shared interest in making high-level radiology discussion more open, accessible and relevant to the broader community.

Topics

Radiology Perspectives is a growing format and a project close to our hearts. This list is a work in progress. Here we give you an overview of the topics we plan to discuss, from editorial insights and publishing strategy to clinical education, AI and professional developments in radiology.

The Editor’s Eye

Editorial experience can shape how scientific work is read, judged and discussed. Reviewing thousands of manuscripts over the years changes how we look at study design, claims, methods, clinical relevance and the message behind a paper. After this session, you may read manuscripts differently as well.

Beyond the Paper

A paper is never just a paper. We discuss how evidence is created, framed, interpreted and sometimes directed by academic interests, clinical needs, methodology and professional debate. The aim is to look beyond the abstract and understand what a study may mean in context.

Why Reviewing Matter

Peer review is work. It is time-consuming, often invisible and always comes on top of everything else. But becoming and remaining a good reviewer is one of the best ways to sharpen academic judgement, improve your own writing and maintain your scientific skillset over time.

Becoming an Excellent Author

Building an academic profile is more than producing one strong paper. It requires strategy, structure, experience and a realistic understanding of editorial expectations. We discuss how to develop publishable ideas, write better manuscripts and build a sustainable academic profile.

Conflicts of Interest: Beyond Industry

Conflicts of interest are not only about financial relationships with industry. Academic focus, methodological preferences and professional identity also shape how we read, interpret and promote research. We want to create awareness for these influences and discuss them constructively.

From Evidence to Practice

Good evidence only matters if it can be translated into clinical reality. We discuss how studies, guidelines and expert opinions influence everyday radiology, reporting, teaching and decision-making. The focus is on what is relevant, useful and realistic in practice.

Professional Perspectives

Radiology is shaped not only by evidence, but also by institutions, societies, visibility, communication and leadership. We discuss AI, academic careers, professional politics and the debates that influence where our field is heading.
